Operational status of medical biotechnology in Nigeria and its significance for national health security
Medical biotechnology has evolved immensely in recent years, with the development of novel methods for disease prevention, detection, and treatment in the health sector around the world. Nigeria is not totally excluded from these benefits, albeit to a minimal significance. Advanced and innovative approaches include biopharmaceuticals, pharmacogenomics, genomics, gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and genome editing. These methods have significantly advanced the development and knowledge of health research. With the rapid growth and discoveries, Nigeria lags even further behind with respect to current technologies and applications of medical biotechnology. The article presents a perspective on medical biotechnology-related applications in operation, agencies that conduct research on using this technology in Nigeria, the drawback of the application of these medical biotechnology technologies, and the potential solutions.
