Nigerian Government Launch National Laureate Prize for Academic Excellence

The Federal Government has officially launched the Nigeria National Laureate Annual Prize, a landmark initiative designed to foster a culture of high-level research and commercial innovation within the country's tertiary institutions. Spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the programme aims to reshape Nigeria’s educational landscape by transforming academic excellence into a primary driver of national development. To ensure the scheme remains sustainable without straining public finances, funding will be managed through the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) and its various partners.

A dedicated 10-member committee, chaired by Prof. Abubakar Sambo, will oversee the selection process, which includes representatives from key bodies like the NUC, TETFund, and the Ministry of Education. For the 2026 cycle, the programme offers substantial financial rewards to incentivise top-tier scholarly work: ₦5 million for undergraduate dissertations, ₦10 million for master’s theses, and ₦20 million for doctoral winners. The official call for submissions is slated for May 2026, culminating in a national laureate gala in Abuja this November to honour the country’s brightest intellectual contributors.
